Alpheus Baker Hervey was a clergyman, botanist, and prominent phycologist and bryologist US. He specialized in marine algae.

Sea Mosses, A Collector's Guide and an Introduction to the Study of Marine Algae was published in 1881. It was written and illustrated by A.B. Hervey, A.M. This in-depth book contains 20 full page prints and many poems regarding the sea throughout.

The prints, or plates, are made by a form of printing called stereotyping. The labor intensive and costly process involves printing each color individually using a metal plate cast from a papier-mâché or plaster mould. The result is a extremely detailed replica of an actual moss or algae found in nature.
